GLOAMING FOREST

Tier 1 Traversal

A forest that has overtaken a village, seemingly overnight. It is wrought with alluring flowers and hidden marshes but hides resentment beneath the boughs of its twisted, humanoid-shaped trees.

Impulses: Discourage logging, ensorcel travelers, overwhelm civilization

Difficulty: 11

Potential Adversaries: Burroska Doll, Flowering Creatures (Blooming Cockatrice, Budding Cockatrice Clutch, Leafcutter Spriggant, Prickleboar), Sylvan Warriors (Soldier, Warden, Fungril Gladeservant), Woad Stalker

FEATURES

Green and Overgrown - Passive: There are multiple paths through this cluttered forest and little way to determine location or direction. Paths shuffle and rearrange at a whim causing all Instinct Rolls used to navigate the forest to have disadvantage.

Where do the winding trails lead? What landmarks show this place is rampant with growth?

Dreaming Spirits - Action: Flowers bloom within Melee range of a PC who must immediately succeed on a Knowledge Reaction Roll (12). On a failure, their scent causes the PC to feel as if they are walking through a halfformed dream that dulls their senses and their thresholds are reduced by 2 until their next rest outside of this environment.

What illusions do these flowers create? Where might the dreams lead them?

Gloamtrap Pit - Action: Spend a Fear to introduce a pit covered with moss and grass. All PCs walking must succeed on an Agility or Instinct Reaction Roll. Targets who fail fall into the pit, taking 1d6+3 direct physical damage and are Restrained by vines until they succeed on a Strength Roll (10) to break free and climb out of the pit.

Was this pit trap set by someone or was the rampant growth enough to cover an existing hollow? Could this pit lead somewhere or potentially split the party?

Roaming Wanderer - Action: Introduce an NPC that knows something about the area and can potentially direct the party. Choose from the options below, or make one of your own. If a PC can provide something that satisfies the NPC’s request, all PCs in the party gain a Hope.
  • An ancient troll who has become exhausted while searching for a way out
  • A small faerie with batlike wings whose home is riddled by woodpeckers
  • An animal that has the ability to speak and would like help obtaining food
  • A tree that has somehow retained its consciousness who wishes to be rid of their curse

Who is the NPC and what do they know about this location? Do some of these NPCs want the forest to stay?
